How Much Does a Tattoo Hurt?

One of the first questions most tattoo virgins ask is, “How much does it hurt?”

That’s understandable. Getting poked with a needle thousands of times over the course of an hour (or several hours) doesn’t sound like a lot of fun.

Really, though, the big mistake most people make here is worrying about it too much. Yeah, it hurts… kind of. But we’re not talking excruciating, can’t-live-with-it pain. For most people, getting psyched up about the pain is much worse than getting the tattoo itself.

Let’s put it this way:

Have you ever had your teeth cleaned at the dentist’s office? It’s worse than that.
Now, have you ever had a bikini wax? It’s not as bad as that.

Having said that, your skin does get pretty raw after several hours of tattooing. If you’re getting a tattoo that will only take an hour or so, you don’t have anything to worry about. If you’re going for a six-hour tattooing marathon, though… that can get pretty tedious.

If you’re worried about the pain, it’s best to start with a fairly small tattoo. It’s better to sport a small, good looking tattoo than a large design that is unfinished because you couldn’t take the pain.
